Trips and Activities

Trips and activities are included as examples only.

On arrival in Paraty, tour the city with a local historian. Spend a full day on a schooner in the bay visiting island beaches, travel to a Quilombo for an authentic feijoada luncheon, tour the community and visit a capoeira school.

In Rio de Janeiro, set off for the Burle Marx botanical estate, with over 5,000 species, have lunch overlooking the coastline followed by the folk art museum, Casa do Pontal with over 8,000 objects representing regional folk culture. Learn to samba with a winner of Brazil's "dancing with the stars." Spend a night at the open air samba performances at Pedra do Sal, gather at the famous Confeitaria Colombo for tea and desserts, visit the Museu do Negro and some of Rio's oldest churches. Rio has notable museums of modern art, one of Brazil's oldest seminaries with Gregorian chant, and the new Museum of Tomorrow. Attend a performance at the Teatro Municipal. For our farewell dinner spend the evening at a churrascaria, one of Brazil's specialties.

Housing

[NOTE: New Haven Housing costs will be updated by 2/1/2024]

[NOTE: Students are required to stay in program-provided housing abroad.  There is no option for individually-arranged housing abroad.]

While in Paraty students stay in the Pousada da Condessa, which is also where classes will meet.

In Rio de Janeiro, students live with host families, who will provide breakfast and dinner daily. Accommodations and distance to IBEU-Copacabana (Instituto Brasil-Estados Unidos), the location where classes will meet, will vary amongst host families, with some students commuting to class by walking and others by taking the bus.

Homestays are an integral part of this program. This living arrangement provides participants with the opportunity to learn more about the host culture, increase language proficiency, and form meaningful connections with the host family or community. Students admitted into the program are expected to spend time getting to know their host family and be mindful of the need to balance time spent at home with time spent traveling or going out with friends. If you have any questions about living with a homestay family, we encourage you to reach out to the program instructor.

Students must leave housing on the last day of the program.

Notes

Three weeks in New Haven, on the Yale campus, followed by one week in Paraty, and four weeks in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Note: Effective Summer 2020, students using an International Study Award (ISA) to participate in this program will be eligible for free on-campus housing and meal plan for the New Haven period.

Participants are responsible for making their own travel arrangements to Brazil, where a chartered bus will convey all of the participants to Paraty. Additional information will be provided upon admission.
