The ISA provides a stipend for one credit-bearing summer study abroad experience for eligible undergraduates receiving a Yale scholarship. You must apply to Yale Study Abroad and be approved for a Yale Summer Session Programs Abroad or Non-Yale Summer Abroad program. Yale Study Abroad does not administer the ISA. A summer of study abroad in Shanghai offers both China novices and experts the perfect opportunity to develop a better understanding of how the country is shaping and shaped by global systems. With a highly customized curriculum, English-taught electives, and emphasis on learning beyond the classroom, you’ll leave with improved language skills, marketable international experience, and a nuanced understanding of Shanghai and China. This program offers courses in economics, Chinese area studies, and history, political science, and global affairs.

Two-Part Application Process
Applying to a Year or Term Abroad or a Non-Yale Summer Abroad study abroad program is a two-part process. These are separate application processes with individual deadlines and can be done simultaneously.
- You must apply to your intended program for admission by applying online from the program’s website. Select the Program Website button below to be directed to more information.
- You must apply to Yale Study Abroad for approval to study abroad and the ability to transfer the credit back to your Yale degree. The designated list of programs on our website does not constitute pre-approval or automatic approval from Yale. You must apply to our office by the relevant deadline in order to be approved. This program is NOT a Light-Fellowship approved program. Students may not apply Light Fellowship Funding to this program.
Send this to the Yale Study Abroad adviser listed on this page. This is not a letter of recommendation, rather a form that needs to be completed by the Study Abroad office.
The internship course cannot be taken for credit. Yale students wishing to do the internship must choose the Non-credit internship and must additionally take two courses eligible to transfer credit (one elective in addition to the internship plus one Chinese language course).
Students are unlikely to be able to use courses from this program towards the language requirement or towards a language certificate.
