Yale Summer Session in Johannesburg: Visual Approaches to Global Health

Description

This program explores the intersection of global health and visual media. The program focuses on global health issues in the region such as HIV, TB, human rights, and violence in public health. Students learn both epidemiological methodology and hands-on filmmaking in order to translating complex public health concepts into a format approachable by a general audience. In addition to traditional learning, students work with instructors, guest lecturers, and production personnel to create a short film on a selected global health topic. Participants choose to receive credit in either AFST, FILM or HLTH.

The class will meet Monday - Friday from 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. and students should expect about 8-12 hours of work outside the classroom each week, as well excursions and other program activities.

Trips and Activities

This program seeks to immerse students in the community and afford students the opportunity to get the most out of their time in South Africa. Planned trips include:

• A tour of the South African Constitutional Court, the highest court in South Africa, including one-on-one discussions with Court justices.
• A visit to the Apartheid Museum
• A day trip to Soweto, including the Hector Pieterson Museum, the Nelson Mandela House, and the Orlando Towers
• A day trip to the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, including the Lion and Rhino Reserve and Wondercave (including lunch alongside giraffes at the Neck and Deck Cafe)
• A 3 day/2-night excursion to a private eco-reserve outside of Kruger National Park. 

Housing

[NOTE: Students are required to stay in program-provided housing.  There is no option for individually-arranged housing.]

Participants will stay in double rooms in a secure estate, just outside Johannesburg. 

Notes

Participants are responsible for making their own travel arrangements and are expected to arrive in Johannesburg, South Africa on the first day of the program, and depart no earlier than the last day of the program (see 'Dates' above); additional information will be provided upon admission.

Important Information Before Applying

• All YSS Programs Abroad are intensive, highly structured academic programs for Yale credit and grades.
• Students may only apply to one YSS Program Abroad per summer.
• Admission is not guaranteed. Applicants should anticipate that more students will apply than there are spots available, and Yale College students should apply to a backup Non-Yale Summer Abroad opportunity.
• Ensure that your transcript reflects how you have met the pre-requisite, if applicable, prior to applying.
• Participants must commit to the full program dates. Late arrivals and early departures are not permitted.
• Participants are required to be enrolled in all program courses.
• Participants should expect evening and weekend requirements. Students who have questions about religious observance during a YSS Program Abroad are encouraged to Meet with an Adviser.
• Program-arranged housing is required for all YSS Programs Abroad. Students are not permitted to secure independent housing. Students who have housing-related questions about placements, allergies, religious observance, or disability-related access are encouraged to Meet with an Adviser.
