The ISA provides a stipend for one credit-bearing summer study abroad experience for eligible undergraduates receiving a Yale scholarship. You must apply to Yale Study Abroad and be approved for a Yale Summer Session Programs Abroad or Non-Yale Summer Abroad program. Yale Study Abroad does not administer the ISA. For all ISA-related details, including how to request funding, when it gets disbursed, how much funding you can expect, and more, visit the ISA website.

Students may participate in Yonsei International Summer School either by applying directly through Yonsei, or by applying through the CIEE Summer Korean Studies Program. Yale students cannot enroll in the 4-week courses and cannot enroll in online or hybrid courses. They must enroll in 6-week courses and the courses must be in person. Check with the study abroad adviser to make sure that the courses you intend to take are eligible to transfer credit.
If students wish to be considered both for direct enrollment through Yonsei and for enrollment through CIEE because they have not yet decided which option they plan to do, they must list both options on their Non-Yale Summer Abroad application (both "Yonsei University International Summer School (ISS), Six-Week Session" and "CIEE Summer Korean Studies"), taking up two program choices. You have the ability to list a first choice, second choice, and third choice program on your Non-Yale Summer Abroad application.
Please see the Notes section below for information about course transfer credit eligibility on this program.
Two-Part Application Process
Applying to a Year or Term Abroad or a Non-Yale Summer Abroad study abroad program is a two-part process. These are separate application processes with individual deadlines and can be done simultaneously.
- You must apply to your intended program for admission by applying online from the program’s website. Select the Program Website button below to be directed to more information.
- You must apply to Yale Study Abroad for approval to study abroad and the ability to transfer the credit back to your Yale degree. The designated list of programs on our website does not constitute pre-approval or automatic approval from Yale. You must apply to our office by the relevant deadline in order to be approved. Select the Apply to Yale Study Abroad button below to be directed to more information.
This program is NOT a Light-Fellowship approved program. Students may not apply Light Fellowship Funding to this program.
Applying through CIEE, the study abroad provider, still allows you to directly enroll in courses at Yonsei International Summer School, but with an additional level of services and support. For example, if you enroll directly though Yonsei International Summer School, housing is not guaranteed whereas CIEE guarantees and arranges housing for students participating through them. Because of these additional services, it often costs more to study abroad through a provider than to apply directly through the university. We encourage you to research both options, as well as consider finances, before making a decision.
Whether you apply through CIEE or directly through Yonsei, you will have access to the same courses and opportunities at Yonsei. Students who decide to participate through Yonsei directly will need to be highly independent and proactive in planning their experience, including securing housing on their own. Students wishing to enroll in the CIEE option should select "CIEE Summer Korean Studies Program" on their Yale compass application. Students wishing to directly enroll through Yonsei should select "Yonsei University International Summer School (ISS), Six-Week Session" on Yale Compass.
If you wish to discuss which option would be best for you, contact the study abroad adviser for this program.
Please review the "Choosing Your Courses" subsection of the Academics and Credit page. Some courses on this program are not be eligible to transfer credit. Consult the Yale adviser for this program for guidance. View the spreadsheet to see which courses are credit-eligible. Courses can transfer credit if offered by a department that exists at the undergraduate level at Yale, or prior approval was granted. Only 6-week courses taught in person are eligible to transfer credit on this program. If a course changes to the 4-week track or changes to online instruction/video lecture, it is ineligible even if this is not reflected on the spreadsheet.
If you are interested in a taking a course not highlighted red on the spreadsheet, but marked "No" for transferring credit, contact a relevant DUS (e.g. the Economics DUS) to seek approval for general transfer credit for the course. DUS approval is not guaranteed. If you receive approval from a DUS, you must forward the email from the DUS to the Yale adviser for this program (listed in the Program Information section on this page). If the DUS approves and the Yale study abroad adviser confirms, you would be able to transfer credit for that course.
Being approved by Yale Study Abroad means that you are approved for your courses that were listed in your credit application. If you switch your courses after approval, you must let Yale Study Abroad know. If you switch courses and do not have them approved and they are not credit-eligible, you may not be able to earn transfer credit.
Language courses taken on this program cannot be used to fulfill Yale's language requirement or used towards fulfilling language major or certificate requirements.
CIEE offers the option to enroll in online Arizona State University (ASU) courses in many program locations. Students who are approved by Yale Study Abroad to participate in a CIEE program are not permitted to enroll in online ASU courses. Yale does not award credit or funding for online courses taken abroad.
