Additional Eligibility Requirements for Transfer and Eli Whitney Students

You are here

Note:It is important to discuss your study abroad plans with Dean Sodi to review your specific academic plan and credits needed for graduation.

Transfer Students

Transfer students are eligible to study abroad as long as they enroll in Yale College for at least 4 terms, earning by attendance at Yale a minimum of 18 course credits.

For Non-Yale Summer Abroad programs, transfer students may receive up to 2 credits for work completed outside Yale after matriculation.

Additionally, transfer students may receive credit for a Year or Term Abroad according to the guidelines of the Yale College Programs of Study: section P, “Credit from Other Universities,” and section K, “Year or Term Abroad.”

Eli Whitney Students

Eli Whitney students are eligible to study abroad as long as they enroll in Yale College for at least 4 terms, earning by attendance at Yale a minimum of 18 course credits, and meet the following conditions:

  • Before enrolling abroad: Have accumulated at least 12 course credits but no more than 22 course credits toward the 36-course-credit requirement
  • While abroad: Enroll in full-time work at the university level
  • Upon return: Enroll for at least 2 terms in Yale College

Tip:All Yale Summer Session Programs Abroad earn Yale College credit, so courses completed on these programs count just as any other Yale course. Transfer and Eli Whitney students do not have any restrictions for participation in these YSS international programs.
