Budgeting for the Experience

You are here

Financial Planning

Yale University offers generous institutional resources to undergraduates to help fund a range of study abroad experiences. While Yale is committed to assisting students, it is important to keep in mind that our funding sources, which are often supported by external donors and alumni, are not infinite. Remember that it is your responsibility to learn about the costs associated with studying abroad, by:

  • Speaking with Student Financial Services if you have questions about your specific financial aid package
  • Attending information sessions held throughout the year to learn about merit-based fellowship opportunities, eligibility requirements, and deadlines
  • Taking advantage of the resources available to help you make informed decisions, such as the Paying for Study Abroad section

Funding Opportunities

If you receive need-based financial aid during the academic year, you have the opportunity to apply your aid toward a designated semester or full-year study abroad program or to apply for the International Study Award (ISA) to support a single international experience during the summer. All students are encouraged to apply for the numerous competitive fellowship opportunities through the Student Grants Database.

Next Steps

There are important questions to consider when calculating your budget for study abroad. You'll find these in the Budgeting section.
